Joseph Fiennes & Teresa Banham in The Herbal Bed A play by Peter Whelan about Shakespeare's Daughter. The Other Place R.S.T. Stratford-Upon-Avon 1996 Acrylic On Canvas This painting is interesting as it was painted a year before Jo Fiennes became a celebrity, and an international star in Shakespeare in Love. Some time before a whole audience of women would sigh when they saw him first come onto the screen in Elizabeth, My painting was hung in the main foyer, and was photographed for the press. Mr Fiennes then placed his own self portrait, a charcoal drawing next to mine, and of course it was soon sold. A good artist as well as a charismatic actor. In my painting of The Herbal Bed, I have used the alchemical ingredients; the sweet smelling herbs in the night's shadow, the fire and flame of the furnace, a man and a woman alone in the moonlight. The play pivots around this meeting in an Atmosphere of tension and romantic possibilities. This painting, as well as all the following paintings, were shown in my exhibition at the De Grazia Gallery in the U.S.A. the following year, at the same time as The English Patient was released, starring his brother Ralph Fiennes. |

Toby Stevens as Coriolanus R.S.T. The Swan Oil on Canvas Toby Stevens played Coriolanus with arrogance, courage and ruthlessness. I have painted him however in a moment of weakness when he makes the mistake of listening to his mother, who is pleading for him to consider the people of Rome. In doing this, he creates his own downfall. His performance was mesmerizing, (he played the part like a young Marlon Brando), and I saw his performance five times. He strutted magnificently, arrogant and handsome. All the girls were in love with him at the time. I was there when his mother, Maggie Smith, came to see the play. Everyone thought he would make it big in Hollywood, and recently he was to be seen as Gadsby in The Great Gadsby. |

Cheryl Campbell as Lady Macbeth R.S.T. Main house Oil on Canvas Cheryl Campbell played Lady Macbeth in a volatile, predatory, but sensual way. She is shown in my painting as a conspiratory woman, standing on the world stage scheming for the power she wants for herself and her husband. She is dressed in a blood red dress, with the ruins of a Scottish castle in the background. Miss Campbell was lovely and her comments were very helpful and encouraging. |

Iain Glen as Henry V R.S.T. Main House Oil on Canvas Henry V, an epic tale of a nation at war. I have painted the young king at the point when he is ready to fulfill his destiny, and with all his youth, vigour and determination, to take up arms against the French armies. Iain Glen was a joy to paint, and helped me enormously; his comments on the painting, and subsequent letters, greatly encouraged me to continue (This actor went on to play Martin Guerre, in the West-end, and is now in a popular series on T.V.) |

Sir Derek Jacobi as Macbeth R.S.T. Main House Oil on Canvas I have painted Macbeth standing before his wheel of destiny; his astrological chart in a sense, and at the moment when he has chosen to listen to his ambitious wife. In listening to her advice, all manner of turmoil is to be unleashed. This painting was hung in the Box restaurant, in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre for a while, near where Sir Derek Jacobi's table was. He was very complimentary about the portrait, insisting that it made him look much younger. |
